Increased crime rates, pharmacy robberies and homelessness are three of the growing problems that can be associated directly and indirectly to Oxy addiction in Toronto. Canadian officials, rehab centers, and physicians are scrambling to prepare for, and get treatment for the increasing number of addicts. Also on the agenda is preventing that number from rising any further, and hopefully seeing the numbers fall.

Between 2000 and 2004, there were 571 persons admitted for opioid detoxification, according to the CFP (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2628831/”). In that time, the number of Oxy addict admissions increased 3.8% in the year 2000, to 55.4% in 2004. It was also found that the amount of Oxy used was substantially higher than that of a normal prescription dosage. Interestingly, during that same time, heroin addictions seemed to remain rather steady.

Most studies, including that of CFP conclude that a physician’s prescription was the most common source of supply, as well as the original source of the addiction. There has long been a public outcry in Canada and the U.S. to convince doctors to prescribe Oxy so often, since it commonly leads to addiction. Apparently, they continue to write them, even increasing the amount of Oxy prescriptions written annually.

Oxy has only been approved for prescription for 16 years. Healthzone.ca (http://www.healthzone.ca/health/article/580198) reported in 2009 that $54 million prescriptions for Oxy had been written. That triples the amount that had been prescribed only 5 years earlier. Interestingly, the number of deaths attributed to Oxy in 2008 was 123, according to the Ontario Centre for Forensic Science. That was up from 63 in 2004.

The ODB (Ontario Drug Benefit) plan pays for over half of the prescriptions written for Oxy in the Toronto area. When they contacted Purdue Pharm, the manufacturer of the drug, they were told that prescription fraud and theft played a part in the growing number of addictions and deaths. Conversely, if the drug weren’t legal, there would be no prescription fraud or theft. Officials struggle to keep the problem under control.

Leading drug rehab centers, such as Narconon Trois-Rivieres, lead the fight against Oxy addictions, and are also vocal about stopping the problem where it begins; with the prescription availability. Their doors are always open at Narconon to help anyone who needs it. They also put out helpful PSAs concerning the growing problem with Oxy addiction in Toronto, and globally. Far too many lives have already been affected.

It is estimated that in the United States, a person is killed by a drunk driver every 34 minutes. In Canada, 3.7-4.4 people die every day as a result of an alcohol impaired driver. It is safe to say that at any given time, there are people on the road of Ontario who have been drinking. In Ontario as anywhere else, weekends account for the biggest percentage of drinking and driving incidents. This is probably due to the fact that most people have weekends off of work, and students do not have classes on Saturday and Sunday.

Accidents can happen in a fraction of a second. When someone’s reaction time is slowed by the effects of alcohol, and their judgment is impaired, they cannot respond correctly to any variance in the road or driving conditions, let alone the actions of another vehicle. They often swerve without realizing it, and then over correct the error. At times, it is obvious to others on the road that a driver has been drinking, but not always. Drivers should never attempt to engage an impaired driver. Stay away from their vehicle as much as possible and contact law enforcement.

Not just in Ontario but also in all Canadian provinces, thousands and thousands of tax and insurance dollars are spent every year for emergency medicine, rehabilitation and property damage resulting from drinking and driving. The human cost is even higher. People have to bury loved ones because of an accident that was completely avoidable. People who drink generally do not drive with the intent of hurting other people. In fact, they often do not even realize they are impaired. That is part of the problem with alcohol. It often is only after an accident that people realize they should not have been operating a motor vehicle. Some continue to deny their problem even after an accident.

Narconon reaches out to communities offering information and rehabilitation to those who need it. New laws are taking effect to curb the availability, or at least track the use of this highly addictive drug. Too many Ontario residents are suffering as a result of OxyContin use, and Toronto may just be leading the way.

In 2003, 100 people who died had OxyContin in their system at the time of death. The population of the greater Toronto area is over 5 million, which means that if 100 people died having Oxy in their system, many more are using the drug on a regular basis, many addicted. Substance abuse centers, such as those run by Narconon, are seeing an increase in the number of OxyContin addiction intakes.

New laws are being initiated to track the purchase and use of OxyContin, which should help to some degree. Of course, drugs bought off the street cannot be tracked. Prescriptions for Oxy, Valium, Codeine, Morphine and Ritalin that are purchased in Ontario will be tracked. It will track the sale and dispense of these drugs, even through private health plans.

Alarmingly, the diversity of those becoming addicted to Oxycodone is increasing. The First Nations communities are being hard hit by injury and death resulting from the use of Oxy. One study, as reported by the CBC, done on the student population in Ontario showed that 1 in 5 teenaged girls admitted using OxyCodone and other Opiod painkillers without a prescription. They often obtained the drugs from their parent’s prescription bottles.

Narconon, a leading rehabilitation center in Canada and the United States, is continuing on the fight to end OxyCodone and OxyContin addiction. They provide drug and alcohol addiction material as well as a successful rehab program. The increase in addictions is alarming, and the news must be spread across Canada and the United States. Drug abuse in Toronto has a high concentration of OxyContin addicts, largely because the drug is so easily and readily prescribed and overused.

Drug abuse in Toronto is not new, but it is increasing at an alarming rate. The newest measures to track the use of OxyContin will undoubtedly help, but more is needed. Friends and loved ones of suspected addicts are urged to find out more about OxyContin addiction and what can be done.

Narconon Trois-Rivières video PSA “The Road to Oxycontin Addiction” tells the story of how easy it can be to get addicted to oxy – a prescription medication, when seeking pain relief.

In 2009, the Toronto Star pushed for an enquiry into Oxycontin addiction and abuse in Ontario, Canada.

The Toronto Star reported that around 500 deaths in Ontario, Canada over the past five years had been caused by Oxycontin addiction, with over $54 million worth of medical prescriptions having been written up for Oxycontin in the previous year.

The then Assistant Deputy Health Minister for Ontario acknowledged that a strategy to tackle the problem was needed. “We need a solution that really helps people – and we need it quickly”, she said.

Cliff Van Rossum, the narrator of the Narconon Trois-Rivières PSA video “The Road To Oxycontin Addiction” graduated in June 2009 from the world renowned Narconon Trois-Rivières drug and alcohol addiction recovery program with flying colors – free of Oxycontin – and addiction.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Cliff, recovered from the injuries that led to him taking Oxycontin, on prescription, for pain relief, now actively promotes public awareness of the risks of Oxycontin addiction and the benefits of Narconon Trois-Rivières Oxycontin rehab.

Cliff is one of the lucky ones.

Many people prescribed oxy for pain relief find that as Oxycontin addiction kicks in, their physical and emotional need for the drug increases. In Canada, oxy can be prescribed in doses from 10mg up 80mg with little or no warning given of the potential for Oxycontin addiction and its potentially lethal side effects.

Oxy is often called “Hillbilly Heroin” because illicit supplies on the street are cheap – the result of over prescription and robbery from pharmacies. Although heroin carries the tag of being highly addictive, a drug to avoid at all costs, Oxycontin addiction is more insidious and possibly more lethal.

People such as Cliff Van Rossum, willing to speak out about their Oxycontin addiction and successful Oxycontin rehab are to be commended.

Narconon Trois-Rivières alcohol and drug addiction recovery programs provide non-judgmental, unconditional support for Oxycontin addiction recovery. Narconon Trois-Rivières Oxycontin rehab is natural and drug-free – with a very high success rate for full recovery.

The Narconon Trois-Rivières PSA video – “The Road to Oxycontin Addiction” give a clear picture on how anyone could fall into the trap of Oycontin addiction.

Drug and alcohol addictions are on the rise, and Toronto residents are not exempt. Each year, in Toronto, there are more divorces, deaths, injuries and crimes committed directly linked to alcohol and drug use. If you are searching for Toronto rehab, there are a few things to keep in mind, including that it might be worthwhile to look into an outside Toronto rehab, like the drug rehab center Narconon Trois-Rivières (Narconon Three-Rivers).

The Narconon Trois-Rivieres Rehab Center is only a few hours away from Toronto

I’m sure you’ve heard it said, but location matters. Even in drug rehabilitation, the location of the facility is often important. However, that doesn’t mean that the best rehab center has to be in your own town. In fact, just the opposite may be true. It is important, when receiving drug rehabilitation, for the alcoholic or drug addict to be out of their own environment. It is very difficult to try to learn to stay away from drugs and alcohol when it is available just outside the door in your own neighborhood. Perhaps the best Toronto rehab wouldn’t be in Toronto at all. The Narconon rehab center located in Trois-Rivieres (Three-Rivers), Québec is one of those centers; not in Toronto but yet not too far.

It isn’t just what is inside the rehab that matters. What is outside the doors matter very much. Walking out the door of rehab is much easier and distracting when the people you know, who have access to drugs and/or alcohol may be walking by at any moment. The interior of the rehab only offers safety and security when you stay inside. Suppose for a moment that a rehab center with a great reputation and high success rate were located in the Québec province. Would that stop you from getting the help you need? It shouldn’t stop you at all; it may be just what you need.

Toronto rehab in Quebec may seem like an odd possibility, but it is not. If the best center is located away from your own territory, it offers a better chance at your success. It takes you just far enough away so the temptations are not as available. At Narconon Trois-Rivières the scenery is different, the people are different, and you can become a different person as well. You can learn to put aside the alcohol or drugs and be happy and healthy. You can relax and concentrate on helping yourself to be the person you want to be, and can be. You can return to Toronto with a new lease on life and be ready to face life without an addiction. Their goal is to offer alternatives to prison for drug related offenses. The jails and prisons world-wide are full of people who have committed crimes due to addiction to drugs. The hope is that by offering an alternative to prison, people will opt to turn away from a life of drugs (and crime) and become happy and productive citizens.

Drug treatment court is only for those who have committed non-violent crimes. They are mostly offered to people who are charged with possessing small quantities of drugs, or perhaps prostitution and property crimes. Most of the time, they are crimes that are committed in Toronto due to drug addiction. It very often becomes a second chance for those who want to turn their lives around. This is an opportunity to break free from drugs and live happy, healthy lives, but only if they take that opportunity. Narconon Trois-Rivières has been successfully helping individuals who have chosen to go to rehab instead of prison.

Toronto Drug Treatment Court offers drug counseling, rehabilitation, housing, and other needs that may be discovered. The program normally lasts about a year, after which, there is a sentence rendered that does not include incarceration. The program is heavily based on community and community services. It is a joint effort between the Centre, the Ontario Court of Justice, the federal Department of Justice and many community agencies. Participation is voluntary.

Since the inception of the Toronto Drug Treatment Court, there has been a decrease in drug related crime, but there is still a ways to go. It is promising, however, that those who have participated in the program usually end the cycle of drugs and crime. There are far less re-offenders among those who have participated in the program. Many of those who are helped are life-long drug criminals. To help these individuals succeed is definitely a positive step.

The Toronto Drug Treatment Court also helps those people who are new to drugs and crime, and puts them on the right course, before they do become life-long criminals. There is a generous mix of people who can benefit from this program. Anyone charged with a non-violent crime can apply through the courts or through their attorney. Graduates of the program are proven to have better success at quitting drugs and turning their lives around compared to those who drop out of the program, or never start.

Recovery from addiction can be directly linked to the program the addict participates in for recovery. It is that simple. Not all programs are the same, and some treatment centers in and around Toronto (and elsewhere) are more successful than others. If a treatment center does not want to give the odds, it can be assumed that they do not have great results. If a drug addict wants to achieve success, choose a center with a good success rate.

The holistic treatment centers, Narconon in particular, boasts one of the highest success rate after two years! The reason for this is partially our detoxification process and also our methods of enabling addicts with information on how to stay drug-free. This means that the majority of the addicts who does our treatment program succeed in getting and staying off of drugs. Other centers usually do not have such a high success rate.

The odds of beating addiction and truly recovering from addiction depend on a proven method and series of programs designed to help addicts recover physically, mentally and spiritually. Settling for anything less than holistic treatment often ends in disaster in the form of a relapse. Be wary of any treatment center that skirts the issue of success rates. Also, if they do provide statistics, ask how they came to that conclusion. Many centers will “disallow” the bottom ¼ of their statistics in order to show a more favorable success rate.

Beating “the odds” improves if loved ones are involved in treatment. In the Toronto area, family members and friends are often asked to support, if not participate in the addict’s recovery. It is always easier to overcome an addiction when there are people holding you accountable and also cheering you on. Support from loved ones is more helpful than many people realize. Breaking free from drugs can be done without support, but the journey is much easier with it.

The chance of totally recover from addiction (meaning staying free of drugs) is good, but with the right drug and alcohol treatment program and support from loved ones, it is excellent. Those in the Toronto area who hope to beat drug addiction have better odds of succeeding than they may think.

Addiction is a compulsive obsession with a substance, which ultimately may prove harmful to the life of the consumer. Though addictions are usually associated with drugs, alcohol and other banned substances, an individual can be addicted to other things such as body building, compulsive eating, etc. Legal drugs can also be a problem even though they are socially acceptable, tranquilizers can have the effect as heroin and some weight loss pills are actually speed. Whatever form it takes, addiction is harmful to the body and a major burden to the province of Ontario.

Drug addiction is a major problem in Toronto, Ontario. Substances such as marijuana (cannabis), cocaine, heroin, barbiturates, sedatives hypnotics, tranquilizers, hallucinogens, inhalants, solvents, stimulants, ecstasy, and GHB are freely used. This problem is pervasive in Toronto and not limited to the homeless and the street youth.

Toronto, the capital of Canada’s most populous province is well known for its drug problem. But this problem is more concentrated among the marginalized population of Toronto. The suburbs of the marginalized people are known for high levels of poverty, unemployment and other social problems such as violence, crime, and drug abuse. While there are several drugs to which the inhabitants of Toronto are addicted, the following are the most commonly available and attract the greatest number of addicts.

Marijuana is mainly consumed by the younger population in Toronto, especially students and street youth. A considerable number of street kids in Toronto admitted to using marijuana on a daily or monthly basis. Of all the drugs on the streets of Toronto, marijuana has the highest number of addicts.

Cocaine use is also popular in Toronto. Adults, students and street youth use this substance. Though the usage is much lower than that of marijuana; a small number of street youth in Toronto are on crack cocaine. Heroin is another drug that was formerly popular in Toronto, but its use has been on a steady decline since the late 90s. This addiction exposes them to risk of HIV infection and Hepatitis disease.

Methamphetamine, known by the street names of Crystal Met, ice, crank, glass, chalk or crystal, is a very addictive drug used by the street youth. This drug poses great danger to its users. Its constant use can lead to self-inflicted mental and physical injuries.

LSD and PCP are two dangerous drugs, however their availability and usage has since been discontinued. On the other hand, ecstasy and GHB are also popular drugs but availability is limited to clubs and party environment. Their usage and consumption in Toronto is very low.

While there are other drugs, these are the most popular ones in Toronto, Ontario. For anyone with a drug related problem or a relative of someone who has a drug addiction problem in Toronto, the best approach is to call a reliable holistic drug rehab center servicing the population of Ontario. Narconon Trois-Rivières is such a program which is not too far from Toronto but yet far enough to allow the recovering addicts to learn and become drug-free without the distractions of their usual environment The objective of the Narconon program and any drug rehab programs is to provide treatment for a drug-free life.

With a population of over two and a half million people, it is no surprise that there is a substantial drug and alcohol problem. Probably the most alarming thing is that the number of teenagers becoming addicted is far more than other age groups. Drug and alcohol rehabs have a difficult time keeping up with the number of people needing help.

There are different theories among the different Toronto drug and alcohol rehab centers. Not all subscribe to the same practices. This is something to consider if checking out rehab centers for yourself or a loved one. Some even use substitute drugs in treatment, which is controversial at best. There are safer and healthier ways of ridding the body of drugs, which is the ultimate goal. Since drugs affect every aspect of a person’s life; the only way to treat it is to treat the whole person. Treating the mind, body and spirit is called holistic healing and it is very effective.

Another thing to keep in mind is the longer a person is able to stay in treatment, the better chances of success. Alcoholics and drug addicts don’t have their lives torn apart overnight, nor can healing take place overnight. It takes time and learned skills to be able to return to their normal lives and be substance free. Residential programs normally have higher success rates.

There are times when an alcoholic or drug addict refuses to seek treatment for themselves. If this is the case; an intervention may be called for. These have proven to be very successful in getting the addict help. After an intervention, most alcoholics and drug addicts will seek help within a week. Normally, under the guidance of a drug counselor, the loved ones confront the alcoholic/drug addict and basically let them know that they will not put up with it any longer. Rules are laid out for the addict and they are told they need to get help.

Drug abuse and alcoholism are far reaching. So many people are affected by them. Loved ones often suffer just as much, if not more than the addict because they feel helpless to do anything as they watch their loved one’s life falling apart. If the addict won’t seek help, family members and friends should act by contacting a drug rehab counselor for help. Help is only a phone call away and it is so simple to do. One step at a time is the only way to combat drug addiction and alcoholism, so take that first step and call.
